A scripting language, script language or extension language is a programming language that allows control of one or more software applications. "Scripts" are distinct from the core code of the application, as they are usually written in a different language and are often created or at least modified by the end-user. Scripts are often interpreted from source code or bytecode, whereas the applications they control are traditionally compiled to native machine code.

The name "script" is derived from the written script of the performing arts, in which dialogue is set down to be spoken by human actors. Early script languages were often called batch languages or job control languages. Such early scripting languages were created to shorten the traditional edit-compile-link-run process.

A. Paystey is absolutely right, but I wanted to go into a little more detail. If you want to build an application that connects to any database, it is usually done via something called ODBC or Open Database Connectivity. Nearly all databases support being accessed via ODBC and nearly all scripting languages have some kind of ODBC support. For example, here's ODBC for PHP: .. and ASP.Net: .. and Python: ... and Ruby:

What are the PROS and CONS of using a scripting language vs C++ code?
Q. I've searched but I can't seem to find a decent answer. What are ya'll opinions? What are the pros and cons of using a scripting language vs c++ code? Thanks...

A. Good question and interesting answers. The cons of a scripting language are reasonably described by the others: slower execution, potentially limited in performing certain tasks, and so on. Some of the pros are touched on: easier to write, less lines of code usually do more functions than in C++, easier to understand, smaller file size for web communications and so on. No one stated the true goal (holy grail) of scripting languages. The ultimate goal of scripts was to make the scripts machine and operating system independent. That's one huge reason why scripts are so prevalent in web communications. We have no clue as to the processor or OS of the people viewing or using our sites. Thus, we roll out generic scripts. Linux, Sun, MS,… [cont.]
